Possible Photo Editor Improvements

by Max 3/31/2008 7:01:00 PM

Hi everyone!

Not so long ago, I have spotted a few things that could be altered to make Aurigma Photo Editor more ready-to-use. I wonder whether anyone shares my views on this. So, here goes the list of possible changes that would probably benefit Photo Editor:

  • Currently, there is a peculiarity using various effects on images: you cannot simultaneously apply multiple effects if these are in the same group. Thus, in the Effects -> Artistic group you can apply either Emboss or Posterize but not both at the same time. If each effect were put into a separate group, then you could apply as many effects as you wish. So, what do you think – do we need to have each effect in its own group, or not?
  • Some sort of File Load and File Save dialogs. As of now, for a quick start, you can only edit the default image. If you want to test it with some images of your own, you have to make a few moves to feed these images to PhotoEditor. Anyway, does anyone feel like having pre-built file load & save dialogs?

So, these are just the things I noticed but I dunno whether these are really what the others want. Well, I hope I’m not alone here :) So, if you have something to say – go ahead!

1. Would it be nice to be able to apply multiple effects? Yes. In fact, I'd say that is essential. Think of it this way: what's the point of being able to apply effects if you can't apply them the way you want or need? As it stands, we have a partial implementation of the feature. Go for it. Make it whole.

2. Loading and saving files are key and integral to nearly all applications. As a developer, I spend a lot of time adding these features to the web solutions we develop. One of the FIRST things I look for when evaluating products that we'll integrate into our software is whether or not the product makes this easier to deal with. Few do. It's almost always a customization...sometimes quite extensive. Give us a break. Build it in.

I love your product. We build CMS systems, and currently are building something that includes some very capable graphics processing features to help users deal with graphics in their websites by using online tools. Your product is one of a couple that we're working with to see what we can accomplish. Online graphics processing has always been one of the weak links in CMS systems...and we're trying to solve that one.

Hi David,

The problem with built-in load and save file functionality is that it is heavily depend on your website structure. Ones want to load files from their own database, displaying thumbnails to the user. Others would prefer users to upload files first. When saving files you may want (or do not want) to overwrite files, specify different settings (say, JPEG quality, etc), resize images before saving it or something like this.

That's why we had to make ability to load/save files through API only. You build it into your GUI in the way your web application requires it. If we added such functionality in GUI of PhotoEditor, it would be either inflexible or not user-friendly enough.

But if you have an idea how to do this, feel free to share. Or at please least tell us how you expect PhotoEditor to load and save images for your application.
